INTERNEWSTIMES.COM – In a landmark case that has sent shockwaves through Singapore’s political landscape, former transport minister S Iswaran has been sentenced to 12 months in jail for accepting gifts from two businessmen. The 62-year-old pleaded guilty on the first day of trial proceedings, bringing a swift end to a case that had captivated the nation.

Justice Vincent Hoong, in a carefully worded judgment, emphasized the gravity of the offenses and the damage inflicted upon public trust. He rejected arguments from the defense for a shorter sentence, ultimately imposing a term exceeding both the prosecution and defense recommendations.
The judge found that Iswaran, while holding a high-ranking position in government, had abused his power by accepting gifts from individuals with whom he had official dealings. This breach of public trust, according to the judge, warranted a significant sentence.
While Iswaran’s lawyer has indicated a possible appeal, the sentence has left many questioning the implications for Singapore’s reputation for clean governance.
The case, which came to light in May 2023, involved a trip to Doha that Iswaran took on a businessman’s private jet without declaring it to the government. This led to a charge of obstructing justice, in addition to charges of accepting gifts.
Iswaran resigned from office in January and made a voluntary disgorgement of S$380,305.95 to the state.
The sentencing has sparked widespread debate about accountability and transparency within the government. It remains to be seen how this case will shape future policies and public perception of Singapore’s political system. (Red)
