INTERNEWSTIMES.COM – In a sudden U-turn, the Malaysian government has scrapped the October 10 deadline for users of the Road Transport Department (JPJ)’s MyJPJ app to adopt the MyDigital ID national identification system.

The decision comes after widespread public criticism over the short implementation timeframe and technical issues experienced by users trying to register for MyDigital ID.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced the change at a press conference on Wednesday, assuring the public that they can continue using the MyJPJ app as usual, with no immediate deadline for MyDigital ID integration.
“I have directed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to allow the public continued access to the MyJPJ app as usual, and there is currently no set deadline, ensuring there will be no disruptions,” said Mr. Loke.
The MyJPJ app, which boasts over 10.5 million users, is a popular platform for Malaysians to manage their transportation needs, including viewing and renewing driver’s licenses, road tax, and vehicle ownership certificates.
The government’s initial plan to force MyDigital ID integration by October 10 faced significant backlash, with many users complaining about the app’s frequent freezing and lag issues. Concerns were also raised about cybersecurity and the lack of choice for users to opt out of MyDigital ID.
While the Ministry of Transport will continue to support the integration of MyDigital ID with JPJ, Mr. Loke emphasized that the process will be implemented seamlessly and will require time for necessary backend system integration.
MyDigital ID, which aims to be the single verification system for Malaysians to access various apps and portals, has been met with mixed reactions since its launch. The government’s decision to backpedal on the MyJPJ integration deadline highlights the need for a more user-friendly and transparent approach to implementing digital ID systems. (Red)
