INTERNEWSTIMES.COM – The music world is reeling from the tragic loss of Nell Smith, a rising star who collaborated with the Flaming Lips and was poised for a breakout solo career. The 17-year-old Canadian musician died in a car accident over the weekend, leaving a void in the hearts of fans and fellow musicians alike.

Smith’s talent was undeniable. At just 13, she recorded a full album of Nick Cave covers with The Flaming Lips, titled “Where The Viaduct Looms.” Her own original music was just beginning to blossom, with a debut solo album set for release in early 2025.
The news of her passing was confirmed by Simon Raymonde, co-founder of her record label Bella Union, on Instagram. Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne shared the heartbreaking news with fans during a concert in Portland, Oregon, revealing that Smith had been killed in a car crash.
Smith’s Kickstarter campaign, which raised over CA$17,000 (£13,000) to fund her debut album, showcased her passion and drive. In her own words, she described herself as “a musician from the UK but I live in Canada these days.” Her dream was to attend music school in the UK, a dream tragically cut short.
