“How Much Do You Make?”  Dating Experts Weigh In on Navigating Salary Questions on First Dates Perbesar

INTERNEWSTIMES.COM –  First dates are often a minefield of awkward questions, and one that can be particularly tricky is the dreaded “How much money do you make?”  While some singles are comfortable discussing finances upfront, others find it intrusive and off-putting.

Dating experts are now offering advice on how to navigate this delicate topic, suggesting that while money is a crucial factor in long-term compatibility, it’s best to avoid the question on a first date.

“It’s not necessary to jump into money conversations if you’re just casually dating,” says Rachel DeAlto, a dating expert at the app Plenty of Fish. “There is a way to respond without feeling pressured to reveal a pay stub.”

DeAlto suggests offering vague answers like:

– “I make a living wage!”

– “My salary is pretty average, but I’m hoping to increase my pay within the next year.”

Kelsey Wonderlin, a Nashville-based dating coach, agrees that it’s best to avoid revealing specific numbers early on.  She suggests turning the question around to learn more about your date’s perspective:

– “That’s a really interesting question. That’s not something I’m comfortable sharing at this moment with you, but I’m curious why it feels so important to you to discuss now.”

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to disclose your salary is a personal one.  If you’re comfortable sharing, feel free to do so.  However, if you find the question off-putting, it might be a sign that you’re not on a date with someone who is a good fit.

The key takeaway is that while money is a factor in relationships, it doesn’t have to be the focus of a first date.  Focus on getting to know your date on a personal level and let the conversation flow naturally. (Red)
