INTERNEWSTIMES.COM – Elon Musk, the tech mogul behind SpaceX, Tesla, and X (formerly Twitter), has been accused of spreading misinformation about the federal government’s response to Hurricane Helene. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has publicly refuted Musk’s claims, calling them “false” and offering assistance to help get aid to those affected by the storm.

Musk, in a series of posts on X, alleged that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was shutting down airspace in the disaster zone, preventing flights carrying supplies. He also claimed that FEMA was blocking citizens trying to help victims. Both claims have been denied by the respective agencies.
Buttigieg, in a statement, clarified that no airspace restrictions are in place and offered to work with Musk to ensure the smooth flow of goods and services to affected areas. FEMA also refuted Musk’s accusations, stating that they are actively providing aid and have deployed Starlink units for communication.
Musk’s false claims were amplified by former President Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, further spreading misinformation. Despite this, Musk’s SpaceX has donated Starlink kits and provided free internet service in areas affected by the storm.
This incident highlights the growing tension between tech leaders and government agencies, particularly in the context of disaster relief. It also underscores the dangers of misinformation spreading on social media platforms, potentially hindering vital aid efforts.
While Musk’s companies have benefited from federal programs and subsidies, he has a history of criticizing government agencies, previously threatening to sue the FAA and attacking the EPA.
